August 2008

Welcome to the August Spark of Life online newsletter. This month we have a new feature article, Wonderful Wraps Rekindle the Spark. This lovely readers story is inspirational and is testimony to the dedication of our members. It truly proves that when the person with dementia has meaningful activity, the rewards are limitless!

This month you can also meet the DCA Team in our new profiles in our forum, or find out more about the new Spark of Life Club Program due for release.

Wonderful Wraps rekindle the Spark

In this new article on our website, read about how a beautiful community project gave a resident a sense of purpose and pride in her handywork.

Rugs for 'Wrap with Love'.

Four years ago, 'Brenda', a resident of Timbrebongie House in NSW, had failing eyesight and was becoming very restricted in what she could do. Life was getting very boring and she was continually using the buzzer wanting staff to do things for her. As a very new A.O, I was given the job of 'finding something for Brenda to do.'

Jane's News

Throughout my recent travels, it has been heart warming to see how the Spark of Life is beginning to be embraced by organisations and carers around the world.

In May, I spent four weeks in Denmark, the Faeroe Islands and northern part of Iceland, presenting the Spark of Life and Eden Alternative to many different facilities.  I was delighted to meet so many enthusiastic, warm and friendly carers in this beautiful part of the world.

Meet a DCA Team Member

We love meeting members of our Spark of Life Community, so we thought we should introduce ourselves!  In the first of this series,  here is your chance to get to know a little more about DCA's Founder and CEO, Jane Verity.

Jane Verity In 1986, I came to Australia on a holiday and met my husband David, who was the reason for my move to Australia from Denmark, and I instantly gained a whole new and loving family. While Mary travelled to Denmark to be with her Prince Charming, I travelled to Australia to be with mine.

Through David, I learned to love camping in the Australian bush and discovered the joy of this country's diverse wildlife.  I just love hand feeding the two wild Kookaburras who come to our house for a daily feed and a chat.
