Introducing Malio House
It was with great excitement that Dementia Care Australia
recently met with our very first Spark of
Life Facility Member, Barbara Falconer from Malio House in New
Zealand.
Barbara met with Jane Verity and the DCA team in Melbourne
to personally receive the facility membership certificate and discuss Malio
House's enthusiasm for the Spark of Life
Approach. 'The Spark of Life is just
what we need,' she said.

Margaret Long - DON - Wyong Aged Care
Many of you would have heard how
the fantastic staff at Wyong Aged Care Facility in NSW turned a recent flood
into an exciting 'cruise' experience for their residents. The facility decided
to make the cruise a regular event and they have now also enjoyed a 'Back to

Sparking Discussions
Dear DCA,
My mum has
recently moved to a nursing home after being in hospital with a broken arm. She
suffered delirium in hospital and is again showing signs of this in the new
home. Mum has now been moved into the Dementia specific unit of the nursing home
but is still very moody and not able to move around due to a pressure sore on her heel.
She is getting
very weak physically and really misses a friendly chat but unfortunately most
of the other people in the unit do not communicate. We are searching for ways
to keep her occupied because with poor sight and low muscle tone, her past
hobbies of knitting and gardening might be out of the question. Do you have any
ideas on how to get her moving and keep her occupied?
Julie.
