new_hilary_image2.jpgHilary Lee is a researcher and innovator in dementia care with over 20 years of practical experience. She is a highly regarded and frequently invited speaker who captures her audiences with short, lively case studies to highlight her research and work as a clinician. Hilary motivates and empowers people to stretch the boundaries of possibilities.

With a background in occupational therapy, research, and dementia consultancy, Hilary specialises in a using a holistic and person-centred approach to the care of people with dementia. She has undertaken many projects that have been the first of their kind including easing the transition to residential care, a new approach to the early identification and prevention of depression in people with dementia, and a multidisciplinary approach to palliative care.

 

Completing a Masters Degree at Curtin University of Technology, WA, researching the outcomes of the Spark of Life Club Program, Hilary first presented her research in 2006 at the World Occupational Therapy Congress in Sydney. In 2008, she presented at the World Congress of Health Professionals in Perth, W.A, the International Mindscapes Conference in Vancouver, and the International Eden Conference in Ohio, USA.

Hilary has a unique expertise in the use of creative arts as a means of self-expression and communication for people with dementia. She has worked with filmmakers in Perth on a documentary about an intergenerational tapestry project for people with dementia. Hilary is also the Chair of the Society for the Arts in Dementia Care (Australia), a chapter of the original Canadian society. Hilary has regular networking links with specialists in aged care throughout Australia, England, Canada, USA, and Europe. She has been an inspiring mentor to OT's and OT students in aged care, supervising over 20 Australian and international OT students and offering them opportunities to experience innovative practice in dementia care.

Working with Associate Professor Dalia Gottlieb-Tanaka and Professor Peter Graf at the University of British Columbia, Hilary co-developed the Creative Expressive Abilities Assessment Tool for people with dementia, which is now being used internationally.
